He embarked on his professional journey with the Nu-Enamel Paint Co. in Chicago and later expanded the business across Europe. However, it was his foresight during World War II that led him to the oil industry as a hedge against anticipated inflation. Over his career spanning nearly seven decades, Mr. Pitts drilled over 3,000 wells, leaving an indelible mark on the energy landscape.
Mr. Pitts' dedication to the industry was evident through his active participation in various industry associations and political action groups. He served as president of the Texas Independent Producers and Royalty Owners Association and was a member of the National Petroleum Council. His influence was recognized by peers and major trade organizations, earning accolades like the Chief Roughneck Award, Pioneer of the Year Award, and the American Association of Petroleum Landmen Distinguished Service Award, among others.
Beyond his professional achievements, Mr. Pitts was a fervent patriot and civic leader. He played instrumental roles in the formation of the Dallas Opera and the Dallas Council on World Affairs. His commitment to education was evident through his support of Southern Methodist University.
Mr. Pitts' legacy continues to inspire, with the L. Frank Pitts Energy Leadership Award being awarded annually by the Maguire Energy Institute at SMU-Cox School of Business. Mr. Pitts passed away in March 2009, leaving behind a rich legacy of precision, responsibility, and unwavering dedication to both the energy industry and his community.
